Healthy living is a complicated business. Of course, eating the right foods, regular exercise and a healthy outlook are all important for maintaining a general sense of well-being. But we’re continually bombarded with different (often conflicting) ideas about what we should and shouldn’t do to stay healthy, leaving many people feeling alternately guilty or pleased with themselves depending on how realistic their goals are and how often they’re achieved or not.

What is clear is that as fallen human beings, we are innately unhealthy from a spiritual perspective. This expresses itself in various ways in our lives – emotionally, relationally as well as physically. Although I am a massive fan of healthy living – that is to say, getting a good balance of exercise and eating without being obsessive - I think the real key to healthy living is actually much deeper. It begins with a healthy soul and inner self.

So here are some steps that I think are essential in helping you get on the path to becoming the healthy, fulfilled and whole person that God wants you to be on the inside.

  1. Get on the right track - Come to Jesus. Confess your sin. Tell Him you need Him. Ask Him into your life. Remember, “by His stripes you are healed.” Although it is possible to be healed instantly, inner healing is often a process. Sometimes that process takes a while. But through it all, he’s still “the Lord who heals you”. So come to Jesus – just as you are.

  1. Be real - Call out to God. Sometimes it may feel like He doesn’t hear you - almost as if He’s a million miles away or He’s expecting you to make all the effort. But He’s right there – listening to you. So tell Him exactly what you’re feeling. If you’re hurting, ask him to heal your pain. Faith never denies present realities. So be honest with God – and yourself.

  1. Eat the right spiritual food – Feed on Gods Word. The Bible is loaded with affirmation, comfort and amazing promises for you. God says them, and given how much bigger He is than us, surely we have no right to argue or say they’re not true or that they don’t apply to us. Whoever you are and whatever you’ve done – Gods word to you is real. Don’t keep telling yourself what’s wrong with you. Instead, set your heart on seeking God and listening to what He says about you. Learn verses that you can quote when you feel like you’re rubbish/ worthless/ unloved/ un-loveable. Make a conscious effort to say them when negative thoughts enter your head - and don’t beat yourself up when you forget or fail – don’t wallow, just start again.

  1. Get help – Get someone on board who will listen, pray and care. You may need someone to pray for your immediate physical healing or perhaps even someone to take you through a process of restoration for what’s been broken (i.e. relationships with God, yourself, your family, others). Maybe you need both? Its OK to be prayed for lots and lots of times – it doesn’t mean you’re a lost cause. Find a church where people will pray and journey with you. There are lots of them around.

  1. Don’t give up, ever – God will never leave or forsake you. His unfailing love for you will not be shaken. He will not forget you. He calls you to return to Him. When you belong to Him, nothing can ever separate you from His love. You are incredibly precious and honoured in His sight. He will sweep away your offences like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. He will wash you whiter than snow. He is for you not against you - not like someone who always change His mind!! Never forget it. Root your life in a personal relationship with Jesus, the one who heals you.
